Hobby Monday: Card Making

How to get started on card making today!

1.) Gather your supplies!

The first thing you have to do is forage through your house and find all art supplies. This includes stamps, scissors, construction paper, markers, stickers, buttons, ribbons, etc. Anything you can imagine being stuck on a card.

  • Sort through it and pitch all unusable materials. Ex. markers that don’t work anymore, tattered paper, etc.

2.) Head out on your bike, car, tractor, donkey and buy more supplies!

Essentials every card maker needs:

  • blank white card — this is very important. It makes your life 56x easier. You might as well stock up.
  • quality card stock of various colors and patterns
  • alphabet stamp set
  • basic greeting stamp set (happy birthday, thank you, congrats, happy anniversary, merry christmas, etc. )
  • adhesive roller, double sided tape

If you are willing to spend more for the non-essentials:

  • Stickers
  • Any fun stamps that strike your fancy
  • Whole punches are really helpful
  • ribbon

Where do I go?

  • My first recommendation is Michael’s (they have everything!)
  • An online option is Stampin’ Up (It’s more expensive but has quality you can’t beat.)
  • Others include: Target, Wal Mart, Hobby Lobby, etc.

3.) Make the cards

  • If you get stuck, look on pinterest  or even google images for
  • Be creative and don’t be afraid to try daring combos
  • Once you are making them for a while you will start to know what you need / want.

5 Best Instagrams to Follow

I am proud to admit that I am addicted to Instagram. I enjoy playing photographer for a bit and searching for an artsy moment to capture and edit. I also love to scroll through my feed. It is highly entertaining. So here are my five favorite instagram accounts.

1.) The Dogist

This account posts pictures of various dogs around New York City. They will posts a picture of an adorable dog with it’s name and the address where it was found. This is the perfect account for the dog lover to follow. The pictures are all very high quality and interesting. They also post very frequently which is nice.

2. ) Humans of NY

This page posts pictures of the people the owner meets while walking around NYC. He then interviews them and includes an excerpt from the interview as the caption. The people always have something cute/ interesting/ insightful/ funny to say. He really captures the person or persons’ character/ personality well in just a picture and short quote. This is also an account that posts often. There is also a Facebook account.

3.) Patagonia

If your like me and you love the outdoors, you’ll enjoy the Patagonia account. Although they don’t post that often, when they do the pictures are thoughtful and quality. Examples include surfing, snow, hiking, zip lining, swimming, and more.  I am always on the hunt for more outdoorsy instagrams to follow. Patagonia does a good job with theirs.

4.) Surfing Magazine

Although I have only surfed a couple of times in my life, I still enjoy looking at pictures of the ocean and of people surfing. I have gotten to know many of the pro surfers such as John John Florence (who is in the picture above), Kelly Slater, and Julian Wilson. This account is really fun to follow. They post cool surfing videos, action shots, and that month’s magazine cover.

5.) New Fork City

This food blog posts pictures of AMAZING food found around NYC. Every single piece of food they post is mouth watering. They also include the restaurant location so you can go eat the food yourself. Fun for foodies who are familiar with NYC and those who aren’t. Best food instagram I have seen yet. Totally worth the follow!

I hope this post helps if your looking for a few Instagram accounts to spice up your feed. Until next time!

Current Book: Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour

Current Book: Amy & Roger's Epic Detour

This book is quite possibly the perfect summer read. It’s creative, sweet, and light. I am going on a road trip to Idaho from CT in July so I thought, “What a perfect book to read in preparation.”
The description found on amazon ,”Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew–just in time for Amy’s senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she’s always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy’s mother’s old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she’s surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road–diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards–this is the story of one girl’s journey to find herself.”

Enjoy at the beach or during long car rides!

Salad Dressing

The start of summer also means the start of farmer’s market. If you’re like me, you absolutely live for farmer’s market. Fresh and local foods, summer heat, and interesting conversations with local homesteaders. In years’ past, I have sold my home made cards at the farmers market. I am doing the same thing this year with an added product — Salad Dressing!

The Recipe: Joe’s Garlicky Vinaigrette

  • Olive Oil
  • Dijon mustard
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Crushed Garlic

The exact measurements are sort of different every time. My dad (the creator of the dressing) just throws in what he thinks is the right amount. Which makes it kind of fun because you have to explore and try. Shake it and enjoy! It will be delicious, I promise! Pair it with the fresh greens from the other stand at the market and you have a great salad!

Summer is Here

Today was a beautiful day for some time outdoors.
First I went on a run. I am training for a 5k using an app called Couch to 5k.
I cannot recommend it enough. I used to hate running, and I mean hate. But ever since I downloaded it I love it. I actually look forward to running everyday. You should all download it.😄😄😄

In the afternoon, I got a haircut (6 inches) followed by book-shopping. I lovvveee book shopping. I can sit in the nooks of a good book shop for hours.

After we got back I went to work in the garden. It’s important to remember to weed everyday so you don’t get overwhelmed. One strategy I use is covering all the soil around the plants with straw. It prevents weeds from growing.

That’s all for now
